Many erotic French postcards made their way to America, where they were reproduced in large numbers from the 1900s to the 1940s. Unfortunately, due to the lack of photographers' marks, it's virtually impossible to know which French studios these pictures came from.
Likely due to being reproduced in much larger quantities, many of these images were not treated with great care. As a result, lots of American postcards from this era have been significantly damaged.
Some also suffered degraded image quality after being repeatedly reproduced from other photographs rather than from the original negative. These are referred to as second or third generation photographs.
Some were even defaced with personal messages.
